Healthy Hair Tips: How I Went a Year Without a Cut or Color

Let me just pre-phase this, it hasn’t been a year exact since I’ve had my hair cut or colored, but 11 months. Last April was the last time I was in a salon and got my hair done! I feel like I need to knock on wood, but at almost 37 I haven’t been blessed with gray hairs yet to worry about. Having healthy hair in general along with a few of these healthy hair tips is how you can get more time between your hair treatments.

Healthy Hair Tips

Extend time between shampooing and using heat tools.

When I do shampoo my hair on average once a week, I use Opalex. I’ve been using it for a year now and even though it’s pricey, a little bit goes a long way. I only use about a nickel size of the shampoo and a dime size of conditioner. If my hair is pretty dirty, I’ll start with a good clarifying shampoo.

On the days I’m not shampooing, I cover my hair with a shower cap. The type of cap truly does matter! I’ve used this shower cap for over 3 years now and even my daughter uses it. It really locks out the humidity and moisture in-between your washes.

After showering I’ll use my tried and trusted dry shampoo. I’ve tried many brands and I always come back to Living Proof. I always stock up when it is on sale. Here’s how I get the most out of my dry shampoo and hair in-between washes.

  • Days 1-2 Use the original dry shampoo.
  • Day 3 Use the advanced clean dry shampoo
  • Days 4-5 Use the original dry shampoo
  • Day 6 Use the advanced clean dry shampoo.

Healthy Hair Tips: Use Quality Tools

Quality of products and hair tools definitely comes to play in scenarios like this. Before using any hot tools on your hair you want to be sure you are using a heat protectant. Madison and I have recently been using this one and it’s getting the job done.

When it comes to hot tools, I truly believe you get what you pay for. Believe it or not, I completed cosmetology school out of high school and worked as a hairdresser for years. [I still get roped into haircuts for my family when we are crammed for time.] Since I completed school, I’ve always bought professional grade tools and products. Yes, Opalex is sold in the stores that are only for licensed professionals. My favorite hot tools that I’ve been using for about 4 years are from T3 Micro. Yes, they are pricey, but often times they open up the “Outlet” where items are discounted by about 70%. That’s when I buy! Madison and I both have the iron and the dryer. Now, if you prefer a straightener I haven’t used T3’s but I’ve always been a GHD girl when it comes to hair straighteners. Perfect plates for going straight or curling.

Also, I don’t curl my hair every day. I can go about 3 days before touching up my curls. If I don’t have anything major going on, I can go longer. I just give my hair a light brushing in the mornings.

Well, my hair may not be perfect… but it’s worked for me. I do have an appointment for cut and color in the next few weeks and am looking forward to a fresh look. Be sure to keep an eye out on social media to see!
